Numbers Stations

I came across this article in wikipedia not long ago, i found it to be pretty interesting.

From wikipedia article: “Numbers stations are shortwave radio stations of uncertain origin. They generally broadcast voices reading streams of numbers, words, letters (sometimes using a radio alphabet), tunes or morse code.”

I found it interesting because of the mysterious nature of it, nobody truly knows who is producing these broadcasts, and even less, why.  Are those numbers and words ultra secret messages? Are there governments involved?  This is truly an anonymous way to send messages.

I came across a pretty good site with an embedded player and lots of samples of broadcasts, some of them are creepy to hear, while some others are a bit boring.
